World Maths DayCentral Scotland MSP, Margaret Mitchell visited Denny High School to meet the staff and pupils just prior to World Maths Day which is on Wednesday 3 March.

Two years ago Denny High School introduced the software for this new method of teaching which makes maths fun for the pupils! Mathletics, a computer based learning programme which really increases skills in mental arithmetic.

As a result the school's Maths department has gone from strength to strength. In 2009 Denny High School made it to the National finals of the Scottish Enterprising Mathematics Competition in Glasgow University becoming 3rd best in the whole of Scotland and they also won the Scottish Heats of the Mathematics Challenge. This year second year pupil, Gavin Robson is one of two Scottish Ambassadors for World Maths Day.

Commenting on her visit to the school Margaret said:

“It was terrific to both see and hear how enthusiastic the pupils are about Maths as they engage and pit their skills against other pupils worldwide as they appear on the screen. Furthermore their teachers are delighted at the increase in their numeric skills achieved whilst having real fun.

I congratulate the school, the Head Master, Mr Miller and the Maths Departmenton on introducing Matheltics to the school and I look forward to hearing how young Gavin and his team do in the competition on World Maths Day when they compete against children from all over the world.”

The Chief Constable of Central Scotland Police, Kevin Smith, visited the school on Wednesday 23 September.  He was very pleased to hear about the good work of PC Chris as our first campus-based police officer.  The Rector explained how PC Chris was building excellent relationships with staff, pupils and the wider community; that he was contributing to classes within the school (eg drugs education, Duke of Edinburgh) and that he was helping tackle issues surrounding crime and antisocial behaviour in the school and in the community.
